Title: Biological Medical Devices and Stem Cells in Cardiovascular and Liver Tissue Engineering
Damage or loss of a tissue or organ is challenging health concerns due to extensive injury, the lack of organs for transplantation and limitations of conventional homografts, xenografts, or synthetic or mechanical prosthetic medical devices. These grafts, however, suffer from disadvantages such as lack of growth potential, have limited durability, and are associated with an increased incidence of repeated surgeries. The field of stem cell-based tissue engineering aims to provide alternative living substitutes that restore, maintain or improve tissue function. In this talk, I will present our results on (i) some of the aspects of our translational approaches in the development and characterisation of indigenous acellular tissue-engineered xenografts which help to bridge the gap from bench to bedside, (ii) strategies for three-dimensional (3D) human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived human hepatic organoid using hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels and bioprinting technology for liver tissue engineering.
